Fashion: Oscar de la Renta – Rest in peace

Oscar de la Renta at his fashion show at Neiman Marcus- Chevy CToday the world has lost one of it’s greatest designers. A legend in the fashion industry; Mr. Oscar de la Renta.

Mr. de la Renta who was known as a true gentleman that was so good at his craft because he loved the women he dressed, has died at 82 years old after a battle with cancer.

“My job as a designer is to make a woman feel her very best.” -Oscar de la Renta-

He was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga, has dressed the wives of four American presidents, is seen as the last survivor coming from an era of fashion greats, was the former president of the CFDA, worked for Lanvin and Balmain and has received many awards and honors for his work and philanthropic endeavors. Mr. de la Renta was a true giant in the fashion industry and he will be missed.

Most recently he was responsible for designing the wedding dress of Amal Alamuddin who married George Clooney.

Mr. de la Renta also just recently had a show at New York Fashion Week for his spring 2015 collection.

I will never forget one of my all time favourite episodes of Sex and the city (s6 e14 “The ick factor”) “Date with the Russian”, where Carrie Bradshaw reads her kind of poetry to Aleksandr Petrovsky. She read from a magazine that describes an Oscar de la Renta dress. The next time she has a date with the Russian Petrovsky he brings her a gift in a white box with a black bow around it; the Oscar de la Renta dress from the magazine. She can’t believe her eyes and inhales deeply when she opens the box that reveals the pink puffy dress. This became one of the most memorable episodes ever and one of my personal favourites. All because of an Oscar de la Renta dress. A dress so beautiful, that it needed it’s own episode.

“We live in an era of globalization and the era of the woman. Never in the history of the world have women been more in control of their destiny.” -Oscar de la Renta-

Mr. Oscar de la Renta knew the woman. And every piece he made was a celebration for women. He leaves a priceless legacy in fashion history behind.
